Turnover generated in EU retail trade down

Turnover generated in retail trade in the Eurozone and EU27 fell by 0.6% and 1.2% respectively in February this year as compared to January following +0.1% and +0.7% respectively in January as compared to December last year. In comparison with February 2008 the changes were -4.0% and -3.4% respectively. The above figures are estimates by Eurostat, the statistical office of the EU.

Comparison with January 2009

Turnover in foodstuffs, beverages and tobacco goods remained unchanged in the Eurozone and fell by 0.9% in the EU27. For the non-food sector the changes were -1.1 % and -1.5 % respectively. Among those member states providing data the retail trade volume fell in 13 member states and remained unchanged in Denmark, Finland and Sweden. It increased slightly in Poland (+0.5 %). Most significant drops were registered in Romania (-7.9 %), Estonia (-5.4 %) and Latvia (-4.4 %).

Comparison with February 2008

Comparing sales figures from February last year with those from February 2009, turnover generated in foodstuffs, beverages and tobacco goods fell by 3.7 % in the Eurozone and by 2.8 % in the EU27. For the non-food sector the respective changes were -3.7 % and -3.0 %. The retail trade volume decreased in fifteen member states. It grew only in Poland (+2.4 %) and Belgium (+0.6 %). The biggest drops were registered in Latvia (-25.3 %), Estonia (-21.8 %) and Lithuania (-19.0 %). GERMAN
