Market for digital games growing by 17 percent

The German market for digital games grew by 16.9% to 2.68 billion Euros in turnover in 2008 which was about 4 percent more than predicted. In 2007 and 2008 this market had already grown by 29 % and 11 % respectively. For 2009 the German Association for Information Management, Telecommunications and New Media (BITKOMS) predict moderate growth. According to BITKOM, new game ideas are more and more appealing to women and older people as well.

In high demand were once more game consoles which were sold 4.6 million times in 2008. This is an increase by 650,000 units or 16.6 % as compared to 2007. Turnover amounted to 960 million Euros.

More and more popular are so-called serious games which are often used in a professional context. On the basis of realistic computer graphic it is possible to simulate even very complex processes, e.g. medical surgery. Using serious games it is also possible for older people to remain fit and train their mental capacity. GERMAN
