About most important German export goods in 2008

In the year 2008 Germany exported goods to the value of almost 995 billion Euros. At the same time imports amounted to almost 819 billion Euros. The lion share of exports (17.5%) was made up by motor vehicles and components thereof followed by machinery (14.8 %) and chemical products (13.9 %).

Exports of motor vehicles and components thereof fell by 5.4 % last year as compared to the year 2007, while those of machinery and chemicals products increased by 3.4 % and 6.5 % respectively.

Most important imported goods to Germany in 2008 were chemical products (11.6 %) followed by crude oil and natural gas (10.0 %) as well as motor vehicles and components thereof (9.0 %).

Imports of motor vehicles and components fell by -6.2 % as compared to the year 2007, while those of crude oil and natural gas as well as chemical products increased by 34.2 % and 2.0% respectively.

The above-mentioned export goods were also those for which the foreign trade surplus was highest. For motor vehicles and components thereof this surplus amounted to 100.1 billion Euros in 2008. With regard to machinery the value of exported goods surpassed that of imported ones by 88.6 billion. For German chemical products the foreign trade surplus totaled 43.1 billion Euros last year.
