Turnover down in German retail trade

According to the Federal Statistical Office, turnover generated in the German retail trade increased by 2.1% in 2008 as compared to 2007. In real terms, however, turnover was down by 0.4% as compared to 2007. In December 2008 turnover increased by 0.6% (nominally) and fell by 0.3% (really) as compared to December 2007.

After adjustments for season and calendar turnover generated in the German retail trade fell by 0.6% and 0.2% in nominal and real figures respectively in December 2008 on the previous month.

With regard to foodstuffs, beverages and tobacco goods the respective changes in December 2008 were +0.4% (nominally) and -1.5% (really) as compared to December 2007. With regard to supermarkets, department stores and consumer stores, the respective changes were +0.7% and -1.1%.

In the retail trade with goods other than foodstuffs the changes were +0.7% and +0.5% as compared to December 2007. The biggest increase in turnover was registered in the mail order business with +7.2% and +6.1% in nominal and real terms respectively. GERMAN
