Fast mobile internet booming

The market for UMTS data services is currently growing rapidly. At the end of 2008 there were 16 million UMTS connections in Germany, according to the German Association for Information Management, Telecommunications and New Media (BITKOM). This year the number of such connections is predicted to increase by about 40% to 22.7 million. This was announced by BITKOM on the basis of a recent survey carried out among mobile data service providers.

According to Prof. Dr. August-Wilhelm Scheer, chairman of BITKOM, one important driving force behind the current booming number of UMTS subscribers is a new generation of Smartphones and Netbooks.

According to a study by the EITO market research institute, turnover generated through UMTS data services is probably going to increase by 8% to 5.5 billion Euros in Germany this year which would correspond to one quarter of the entire mobile phone market. According to BITKOM, turnover generated through mobile internet access and mobile mail has in the meantime grown bigger than that generated through SMS and MMS services.

Total turnover generated through mobile phone services is expected to grow by 0.3% to 22.3 billion Euros in 2009. Turnover generated through mobile phone calls is forecast to fall by 2% to 16.8 billion Euros due to falling prices and flat rates. GERMAN
