In the Eurozone (EZ15) unemployment stood at 7.3% (adjusted for season) in July which is the same rate as in June. Thus, the rate in the Eurozone was exactly as high as German unemployment. One year ago the rate in the Eurozone was 7.4%. In the EU27 unemployment did also not change in July as compared to June and amounted to 6.8% which is 0.3 percent less than in July 2007.
Eurostat estimates that in July there were 16.3 million unemployed people in the EU27, 11.4 million of which in the Eurozone. As compared to June 2008 the number of jobless people fell by 73,000 in the EU27 and increased by 25,000 in the Eurozone. In comparison with July 2007 the number of people without job fell by 563,000 in the EU27 and increased by 59,000 in the Eurozone.
The lowest rates were registered in Denmark (2.3%) and the Netherlands (2.6%) and the highest in Spain (11.0%) and Slovakia (10.3%).
Taking into account the twelve past months there were twenty EU member states in which unemployment decreased, six in which it increased and one country where it did not change. The most significant decreases were registered in Poland (from 9.5% to 6.8%) and Denmark (from 4.1% to 2.3%). Major increases were in Spain (from 8.2% to 11.0%) and Ireland (from 4.6% to 5.9%).
