The German retail trade generated 3.1% more turnover in nominal terms in July 2008 as compared to July 2007. In real terms turnover did not change even though there was one more shopping day in July this year. In comparison to June this year turnover fell by 1.3% (in nominal terms) and 1.5% (really) in July. These figures are based on provisional calculations by the Federal Statistical Office.
Turnover in foodstuffs, beverages and tobacco goods increased by 2.2% nominally and fell by 2.9% really in July this year as compared to July 2007. With regard to supermarkets, department stores and hypermarkets the respective figures were +2.4% and -2.9%. The specialised retail trade in foodstuffs suffered from losses in turnover by -0.4% (nominally) and -3.9% (really).
In the retail trade with non-foodstuffs all retail trade sectors sold more in July this year than last year in both nominal and real terms (+3.9% nominally and +2.0% really).
Over the first seven months of 2008 the respective figures were -2.2% and -0.5%.
