In both the Eurozone and the EU27 employment grew by 0.2% in the second quarter this year as compared to the first quarter. This increased corresponds to 283,000 people in the Eurozone who found a new job and to 401,000 people in the EU27. However, the increase was smaller than in the first quarter when the growth in employment amounted to 0.3% in both regions.
Comparing these figures to those from the second quarter in 2007 employment grew by 1.2% in the Eurozone and by 1.3% in the EU27 with the respective figures for the first quarter being +1.6% and +1.5%. Eurostat estimates that there were in total 226.4 million employees in the EU27 in the second quarter this year, 146 million of which in the Eurozone. All the above figures are provisional ones provided by Eurostat, the statistical office of the EU, and adjusted for season.
