10 percent more imports and exports in January

In January 2008 84.4 billion Euros worth of goods were exported from Germany. The value of imported goods amounted to 67.3 billion Euros. These preliminary figures were published by the Federal Statistical Office. In comparison with the figures of January last year exports and imports increased by 9% and 10.2% respectively.

As compared to December 2007 exports and imports increased by 3.8% and 4.2% respectively after adjustments for calendar and season.

The foreign trade balance closed with a surplus of 17.1 billion Euros in January 2008 while the surplus had been 16.4 billion in January 2007. After adjustments for calendar and season the foreign trade surplus amounted to 16.1 billion Euros in January 2008.

According to provisional calculations by the German Bundesbank, the balance of current accounts closed with a surplus of 15.0 billion Euros in January 2008 while one year earlier the surplus had been 14.4 billion Euros.

German exports to EU member states amounted to 54.3 billion Euros in January 2008 while there was 43.1 billion Euros worth of imported goods from these countries to Germany.

Exports to third countries other than EU member states amounted to 30.0 billion Euros and imports from these to 24.2 billion Euros. In comparison to January last year exports to and imports from third countries increased by 11.5% and 8.5% respectively. GERMAN
