According to the Federal Statistical Office, in the year 2007 there were 1302 breweries in Germany. About half of these (627) were based in Bavaria. Another 182 breweries were located in Baden-Württemberg and 116 in North Rhine-Westphalia. Since the middle of the 90s the number of breweries has virtually remained unchanged.
Thus, the number of small breweries producing up to 5000 hectolitres annually increased by 37.2% to 844 in the period between 1993 and 2007. At the same time the number of breweries with an annual output of between 5000 and 500.000 hectolitres fell significantly by 35.9% to 413. With regard to large-scale breweries producing more than 500.000 hectolitres annually, there was a decrease by 13.5% to 45 as of 2007.
