Consumer prices up by 2.4 % in October

According to the Federal Statistical Office, the consumer price index for Germany will probably increase by 2.4% in October 2007 as compared to October last year. As compared to September 2007, the increase amounted to just 0.2%.

This high annual inflation rate is in particular due to higher prices for foodstuffs and non-alcoholic beverages. In the six Federal Lander which have so far been analyzed, these increased by between 1.3% and 2.4% in October 2007 as compared to September. Thus, these products were between 3.5% and 5.7% more expensive than in October last year.

The so-called harmonized German consumer price index calculated for European purposes will presumably increase by 2.7% in October 2007 as compared to October last year (in September 2007: +2.7%). As compared to September the index increased by 0.2%.

The final figures for October 2007 will be published on November 15th. GERMAN
